Hey Mattie, I was just thinking back about 20 years ago or so when I walked into Sea World to start my first day as an annoucer for the dolphin show. I was so scared and thought I'd never be able to do. Just then this beautiful girl, with the warmest smile, walked over to me and told me I was going to be just fine. You gave me the confidence that I needed. I would watch you do your announcing with such ease and grace and I can remember saying to myself "I hope someday I can be half as good as Mattie is!"
After I left Sea World we didn't see each other until we both were at Torrey Pines High school to watch both of our daughters perform in a show. You are still the same wonderful person I met 20 years ago! When our girls were performing Pippin, the show that they would take to Scotland, you knew I was having a tough time with my dad going thru cancer and I had a lump on my breast that they weren't sure yet if it was cancer and you told me to be strong and you said you would pray for me and at this time you were thinking of me and I had no idea what you were going through! Well, I just want you to know that my prayers are with you and your family. I'm here if you need me... Have your little ones come over for a play date so you can rest...anything you need!
You have so many people who love you (I'm one of them) because you give so much love to them!!
Love, Pixie Warren
Hey, think of you every day, Donna went thru the same therapy and operation to survive... it's a no brainer that you have personal strength and God with you. You also have my prayers and love. I'm so sorry that you have to go thru all this, but I know (I had chemo, too) not as much as you, but I sure do look at life differently now. Anyway ,you are in my day and prayers. Keep kicking ass, think positive and remember God is always with you. Ask and you shall recieve. God loves you and so do I.
Love, Phil Anaya
My dear Mattie it's been such a long time. Just this past Saturday I told friends about you at a dinner party and our drive over to a first audition 20 years ago! I can't believe I saw your story in today's paper. I didn't know you were facing such a challange...but I could immediately see that you are facing it with Grace. That's how I remember our friendship the most, you were always so classy! It's been such a long time...but you'd be surprised how often I tell friends about my first friendship in San Diego...(most times I leave out the Border Patrol part! haha)... to my first friend in San Diego I love you and wish you Godspeed to health. I'll be there Sunday.
Love, Suzy (Bond)

Mattie, thanks for remembering and thanking lowly little me back when I used to help the band some years back. It was always a nice lift to be thought of in even that small way. I see it is coming back to you, with all these people around you to help in any way they can, or to just share your experience with you. Thanks for being beautiful just as you are.

For those of you who din't know Mattie from back in the day let me tell you. I met Mattie at Yuma High School in 1974. We sang, played and partied together all through high school as members of the Yuma High Choralairs. In addition to being the girl all of us guys wanted, she has been blowing away audiences since way back then. We were selected to perform with 'Up With People'together in 1978 and traveled the world in seperate groups. I can assure you she blew the Europeans away with that awesome combination of beauty, stage presence, and God given incredible voice of hers. We went our seperate ways in 1979 and re-connected 6 years ago. She has remained true to her art all these years like me and we have developed a tremendous musical bond. We e-mail or talk after performances to wind down. She might be in Florida doing a corporate gig and I might be finishing with a concert. To be able to pick up the phone and talk to her or even through e-mails has been such a blessing to me. I love her family and have not had the oppertunity to meet them but our families will unite soon. Mattie you have been an inspiration to me to continue writing music. I have composed music for you that you will hear soon. I wish I could be there on the 15th with you and Troy and the kids but have a gig out of town. I will be carrying you in mi corazon that day and siempre. Mattie you WILL beat this I know it and feel it! Remember the dream I told you about? Debra, the girls and I will continue to pray with you and all the other people who love you. Con todo mi amor por mi amiga de 32 anos!

Hi Mattie, Back in March, I made the decision to walk the November Breast Cancer 3-Day here in San Diego because of my cousin who didn't beat the odds back in the 1970's. Today, I'm walking with YOU in my heart; YOU who are beating the odds in 2006! When I'm asked by fellow training walkers why I'm doing this, your name and story is what I tell.
Through God's divine providence, I have the honor to know you and be blessed by our friendship. It certainly has grown via email and short hugs at church lately. But it's deep from a place only God can create. You are so loved by so many and now I know why.
I'm proud to be among those whom you call friend and Christian sister. I'll look forward to hearing you sing "Celebrate", "I Will Survive" and any other powerful song that shouts to the world that you've beat this!
Love and God's Blessings to you, Troy and the kids.
Lorraine Clayton
It's been a long time since I've seen you! After doing Songwriter Spotlight for 6 years, I moved to Tahoe and lived there for the past 5 years. Just moved back to San Diego. Stunned to hear the news from Eve, yet also thrilled to see that you have such dear friends who are making this kind of an effort to rally behind you. I've always liked you and know you'll shine through this!
Much Love, Brad Cahill
Mattie, what can I say? You and the family are going to get thru this....and come out on the other side better for the battle that life has shown you. I miss seeing you and hearing your beautiful voice. May God Bless you and your family and keep you in comfort and peace. I'll be saying a few extra prayers til you don't need them anymore! Love to you and the kids and Troy.
Much Peace, happiness and LOVE! Heather Faris
Mattie -- I hope that you are feeling all of the love that everyone is sending you -- you are an amazing girl and I'm glad our lives have intersected and that I have been fortunate enough to have met you and gotten to know you over the years. My positive thoughts and prayers are with you, always!
With love, Joanne M.
Mattie, remember, all those years ago, at Sea World? You were the queen of entertainment- you can do anything-look where you've come since then! Rebecca and I will be there at the concert, and send you good, strong, loving thoughts and prayers!

Mattie, Gia and "Guppy": Joe let us know about what has happened. We send our love and prayers to your lovely, wonderful and talented family. A few years ago, I did all 60 miles of the Breast Cancer Three Day and met amazing, inspiring women who found a way to fight. I know you, Mattie, are just like them, and your beautiful, amazing girls will be helping you fight the whole way. My father is a prostate cancer survivor and he tells me time and time again about the inspiring women he met in therapy. Cancer can be conquered. We will see if we can make the concert, but if we can't, know we are praying for you, and thinking of you.
Love, Chris and Cindy Mersten
Mattie - I will do everything I can to be there. I wish you, Troy and the kids all of the best during the healing. If there is anything else I can do please do not hesitate to call. Continue to be strong.
Patrick Giblin
It has been ages since I've seen you and was so saddened when I got bumped to this site trying to track down Laymon. Please know that the prayers for you and your family stretch far and wide, and especially from deep in my heart. Will do my best to make it on the 15th.
Love, Jodi-Renee Kaplan

Mattie Darlin, Just know many prayers are heading your way every day from St. Gabriels, the Carmelites in Costa Rica and San Diego, also the many friends in Albuquerque. I think of you often and Gay and I will be bringing food soon, as soon as we know a good day. Will be calling you. Much much love from Eves Mom!!!

Mattie, I was devastated and in tears when I heard the news. I'm sorry I have not called you since we saw each other at Christmas. Each time we run into each other its as if it was yesterday that we shared that cramped house in P.B. with Kurt. You have made an incredible life for yourself over the past 20 years and I feel blessed that you still reappear in mine semi-regularly.
I just spent last weekend walking in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Long Beach. I stayed at Steph and David Mendoa's house, who are the one's to share your news. I walked 39 miles with 1600 people who have been affected by BC.
In all future walks/fundraisers I do, I will honor you, my mom and other friends who have been touched by this disease. I will do what I can so our girls don't have to fight for a cure. You are truly an inspiration and I hope you know how much you are cared for.
See you at the concert, I hope! Your spirit surrounds us all!
Love, Kim (Glasgow) Baranek
Mattie, I once told you that you were an inspiration to me for all the hats you wear, from performer to wife and mother, doing it all with the strength of a true female role model. I just want to reiterate that in light of everything that's happened, it is even more clear to me what an inspiration you are to so many people who meet you. You've influenced me profoundly, and I know I don't know you that well, but ever since meeting you through Chris, your energy and light has inspired me to keep working hard to develop my music and be the best person I can.
Thank you so much for that.
Lisa Pisano
Sister Grease!! Ah, a name from the past comes at you to tell you that you have been loved through the years. I first saw you perform when you were in high school, and approached you to sing in the band I was in (that would be The Grease Brothers, later "SaddleTramp"), and six months later you called. The rest is history, as they say. Your friendship is important to Patti and I, and you are constantly in our hearts and prayers. The music we shared in your formulative years was cool, yet the friendship we've maintain all these years is cooler. Bottom line is, music may be our passion, but the love of family and friends is life itself. And girl, you are loved! Take a deep breathe, close your eyes.....can you feel it? It's love coming at you.....

Dear Mattie, Fellow Yuma High Criminal...for those who don't know that was our school mascot. I still have the picture of us outside of Tucson.
Though we have not spoken over the years, I can see by reading the comments that you are as loved and appreciated by many as you were back in the day.
You are one of those few people in life that touch whoever they come in contact with in a positive and inspiring way. Your smile shines as brightly as your heart.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know that you can beat this and those of us who love you stand with you. If there is anything that you need or that I can do...please let me know. My nursing expertise is in pain management and palliative care...and my life work is in advocating for people to have access to care. I have contacts within the ACS, Susan G. Komen, Cancer Care and the Lance Armstrong Foundation as well as many other organizations...so if there is anything you need...just say the word.
Be well my friend...though I won't be there for the concert in body...I will be there in spirit.
Much love... Pamela
Mattie Mills! Just want you to know that as always Candis, Ian, B2 and I send our love, good karma, positive energy and anything else we can think of your way. And it's such a short trip over there - it should all get there in no time, so let me know when it arrives, will you? :-) I think this benefit is an outstanding idea and I'm glad I thought of it - no, no, please - it's my pleasure and think nothing of it. Hey, I told you I was taking a comedy class - I didn't say I was any good at it!
You are the best, my friend, so please keep fighting away and let me know if there's anything I can do. I'm more than happy to meet at the park and swing on some monkey bars with ya' - or, you know, just watch other people do it - 'cause it's actually really hard....
Love, Bob May and family
Dear Mattie, You have reminded me of our rich history...I thank you for that. It also inspires me to build a rich future. I continue to be mesmerized by "Eclipse of the Soul" Keep up the good fight, the Lord will protect you always. You and the Family are always in my prayers. It gets easier and better.
Much Love, GL

Well "daughter" we've been in each others life a long time.I watched you grow from a sweet young girl to a sweeter, beautiful woman, wife and mother. I held you in my arms many times to try to make the hurt go away. Know that I'm always there with that hug whenever you need it. I know you'll get thru this as you have many bumps in the road. I'm always here
Mom Jean
Dear Mattie, Many years have passed since we have seen each other, but I hear about you through various Up With People friends. I just want you to know that I am sending positive, healing thoughts your way. Godspeed on your way to recovery... Rock On!
Much Love, Dan Popp Redmond,WA
It has been many, many years since we have seen each other Mattie. When Mom (Jean) told me about you having breast cancer I cried. I thought 'Why Mattie? Hasn't she endured enough trials and tribulations to last a lifetime? She of all people doesn't deserve this battle too.' The answer will come to light one day...
I know you will survive this Mattie. Since I first met you (and I'm sure everyone else that knows you can attest to it) I saw your spirit - a spirit that lives in your heart of strength, courage and determination for life. With this spirit you have touched so many people but now you need to draw on it to endure this.
It is wonderful to read the messages here and know you have so many friends and family around you for love and support. Don't give up the fight! Please know we are all praying for your recovery and want to give you any help we can. The saying, "Let go, and let God" comes to mind. Sounds like relief to me, and good advice.
Patti Walker Santa Cruz, CA (formerly Yuma, AZ)
Hi Mattie! It was truly wonderful to see you singing again at NCCF! You have always been an inspiration to me, and now even more so than ever. I know you carry a lot of love in your heart, because it comes out in your music, and I know that God's love will see you through this. I continue to pray for your healing, and as Ed would say "courage to you"!
Love, Sharon
Hi Mattie, I don't know if you remember me or not, but I'm Gay Xavier's friend (across the street); I am praying for you and I know that he will be taking care of you. I'm planning to attend or help out at the Benefit Concert. My prayers continue for you and your family.
Much Love, Marianne Bohne
Dear Mattie, I hope Laymon told you that you are in my thoughts and prayers everynight. You are the first one I pray for because you have brought so much joy to me through your singing. You are a wonderful person and what you and Mark did at my brother's memorial mass was just amazing to me. You took the time to do something nice for our family and especially my sister-in-law Teri.
I admire your strength and that is what I pray for and the endurance to keep plugging through this. I know it is a long process because I went through this with one of my girlfriends and she has been cancer free for over 20 years. so keep the faith and we all will too.
Love, Ed's sister Linda
Hi Mattie, It was a nice summer afternoon about four years ago when I attended my first outdoor concert, at Memorial Park in Chula Vista. I really had no idea what to expect from the event, it being my first. I parked my truck close by and as I was walking to the event, I saw what appeared to be some homeless guy living out of his car. All kinds of clothing, papers, notebooks and stuff in the back seat. The guy was changing his shirt right there next to his car. Turns out that it was just Mark getting ready for the show. It was a wonderful experience for me. The Heroes were having so much fun and their music was so terrific. I thought to myself, how cool is this?
Anyway, Laymon walked up to me and said "hello, nice to see ya", all while not missing a note on his bass. And then, Mattie, you came down and out into the audience and sang "At Last". You walked right up in front of me. And for just a second, while you were singing, you looked right into my eyes.
Mattie, it was through you that I met Eve. Eve is a wonderful person and she has a heart much bigger than the moon. She cares so much for so many. Especially, she cares for you. Me too.
Love and take care Mattie, Dennis
Hi Mattie! Although we've never formally met, I feel like I've known you for a long time. Any friend of Eve's is certainly a friend of mine. I was honored that the two of you let me take a sneak peak at the book you are working on.
I know how much your friendship means to Eve. My best friend and I are celebrating 50 years of friendship this year and I wish the same for you and Eve a bit further on down the road. :-)
You are in my thoughts and prayers every day.
Take good care! Anita York
Hi Mattie!! I've said it before and I'll say it again... You are my Hero!
I don't know where I would be in this crazy world without your love and support and wisdom and light. You give so much and never ask back a thing. God sent you to me to show me what unconditional love looks like... and to give me something to shoot for. You make me want to be a better person and our friendship fills my heart everyday.
I am praying for you and know that you are healed now. God doesn't work this hard to bring people together for nothing... there is so much more to do and so many people need to hear your story! I love you!
:o) Eve Selis
Hey Mattie, just wanted to say how great it was to see you today! I'm constantly amazed at your disposition and attitude in life. You are always positive, no matter what the circumstance - and it's great being friends with someone that treats life as you do. I'm glad to see you back at it again. We all know how strong of a woman you are (and wouldn't have expected anything else from a trooper like you), but in case it goes unsaid by others, I just wanted to say "you rock!" :-) You're courage and strength should be a constant reminder to us of what true struggles are, and teach us to not sweat the small stuff.
With the group of friends you surround yourself with, you might hear words of support and encouragement all the time, but I still have to say mine. Keep up the good work, continue with the strength you have already shown, and be sure to let me know if there's anything I can do for you!
